It was time to stop thinking of the finale and get back to looking for other work. I went on auditions but didn’t book anything all summer. One audition did come up that was one of the first times I actually hoped not to get a great job. And it would have been a great job—a part on Nash Bridges that would shoot in my other favorite city, San Francisco, and probably reoccur.

In 1998, we had decided it was time to move up to a small house. Duffie had grown up in an actual house, and I lived in one once when I was five years old for a short time. We didn’t want to see our son grow up in apartments like I did. We wanted him to have a yard and a dog and all that. I wanted him to live my childhood fantasy—a real house!

We didn’t have much to spend, so we searched and searched and finally found a cute little house with about the same square footage as the condo but with a small yard. It was mostly in front, but a fence around the front would make it a place for a kid to play. We were set to move in on a Monday morning in August. It was going to be a complex move. We needed to find a renter for the condo as real estate prices were low, and we actually owed more than it was worth, so selling it was out of the question.

The real estate agent felt it was too crowded with our stuff to show, so we put half of our stuff in storage to make it look less crowded when renters came to look at it. When it came time to move, we would be moving our stuff from two different locations. The week before the move, I got this audition for Nash Bridges. Now mind you, the show filmed in San Francisco, and ever since I went to school there, I was madly in love with the city. I would go back every once in a while when I could just to visit.

In those days, travel was not something we could afford; but from time to time, I’d be able to make one happen. Any chance to hang there was important to me. The part was good too. An Israeli plumber who, the casting director said, would reoccur on the show. All this sounded like a dream come true.

On the Friday before the move, my manager called and said it was between me and one other guy; and if they picked me, they would fly me up on Sunday to start filming on Monday, the same day as the move. What a dilemma! I couldn’t imagine Duffie moving all our stuff from two locations all by herself. All our friends were too busy with their own lives to help with such a thing.
